Some historians have propagated a misconception that Imam Husayn ibn Ali sought to meet Yazid personally to settle the dispute on caliphate, which is not true. Imam Husayn was the Universal Divine Man of his era, he could not pledge allegiance to any other person.

Even if it was merely about outward governmental matters, he could never have considered swearing allegiance to such a sinful and debauched individual as Yazid or settle matters with him. Hence, the historians who have written so, committed a historical error.

Although the atrocities that Yazid inflicted upon Imam Husayn and his family overshadow all his other sins, even if we set aside this major sin and examine his other deeds, there remains no doubt that he was not only far from being a believer but also not a Muslim.

It is both painful and perplexing that the supporters of Yazidism describe the Battle of Karbala as a war for power between two princes. In reality, Husayn ibn Ali knew about his martyrdom since young age and never sought to evade it.

Throughout his life, he did not pray to be spared from this fate and remained in a state of complete submission to Allah's will. His encampment in the plains of Karbala was for Allah's consent, not for the pursuit of power.
